Calculate an APK’s SHA-256 checksum

APK SHA-256 Verifier calculates the 64-character SHA-256 checksum for a file selected in the browser. The calculator reads the file on the device in 4 MB chunks and sends no file data to a server.

01

How does the APK SHA-256 Verifier work?

The calculator reads the selected file in 4 MB chunks and updates one SHA-256 state after each chunk. The final 256-bit digest is displayed as 64 lowercase hexadecimal characters. Chunked reading prevents the page from loading the complete file into memory at once.

02

What does a matching SHA-256 checksum establish?

A matching SHA-256 value establishes that two files contain the same byte sequence. A checksum does not identify runtime behavior, inspect permissions, confirm a signer, or provide a safety conclusion.

03

What is a known SHA-256 example?

The 3-byte ASCII text abc produces this published SHA-256 test value:

ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad

Create a plain-text file containing only abc, then select that file to reproduce the value.

APK SHA-256 questions

Does the calculator upload the APK?

No. The page contains no upload request or network connection for file data. JavaScript reads the selected file inside the browser tab.

Does the calculator modify the selected file?

No. Browser file access is read-only in this workflow. The calculator reads bytes and returns a hexadecimal digest.

Can the calculator process a file that is not an APK?

Yes. SHA-256 accepts any byte sequence. The file picker emphasizes APK files because the interface is designed for APK checksum comparison.

Why does the calculated value differ from a published checksum?

Different SHA-256 values mean the byte sequences differ. A renamed file retains the same checksum, but one changed byte produces a different digest.

Is an APK file checksum the same as a signer-certificate fingerprint?

No. The APK file checksum digests every byte in the complete APK. A signer-certificate fingerprint digests the certificate data associated with the APK signature. The two SHA-256 values answer different questions and should not match.
